The Ginseng originated in China and Korea and for thousands of years was used extensively in Chinese medicine. The importance of ginseng is now accepted by the medical fraternity the world over. The ginseng plant is not easy to grow. It takes six years for the plant to grow and it can be up to three feet tall. Earlier it used to grow in the wild, but now it is grown commercially. It is the root of the ginseng plant, in which is concentrated all its medicinal properties. It is used for stress related problem that affects the liver and the heart. It can also calm you down and put you in a relaxing mood. It is a stimulant to relieve exhaustion and improve concentration. Ginseng contains compounds that are unique to the plant that have strong effect on the adrenal glands. The hormones secreted by the adrenal glands are used for fighting both physical and emotional stress. In modern scientific research ginseng is known as an adaptogen. Adaptogens are substances that assist the body to restore itself to health and work without side effects even if the recommended is widely exceeded. Given its adaptogen effects is used widely to reduce cholesterol, increase energy, reduce fatigue and prevents infection. Ginseng is also used as an anti-aging supplement. It can alleviate some major effects of aging, such as degeneration of the blood system and increase mental and physical ability. Ginseng is used as tea, in bath and as tonic. However ginseng must not be used for three months at a time, because over dosage may lead to restlessness and fatigue.
