Are you serious about changing your bad habit? Are you desperate to quit smoking or lose weight? Then you have encountered the problems that arise when you want to change your lifestyle. Biology has given us a weapon to keep things in balance, which is known as “homeostasis”. It is what keeps our body temperature, weight and mood steady. However, homeostasis is a double-edged sword. If the body is eating more than it needs, dieting will cause hunger pangs. The same applies when we are trying to quit our old habits, homeostasis acts as an inhibiter. Then how do we succeed in giving up our bad habits? The Finnish author Jari Sarasvuo has given us seven steps to reach our goal. Step 1: Aim to change your action and habit, but do not become prisoners of your goal. Those who have become prisoners of their goal are dissatisfied with seemingly insignificant steps towards their goal and do not enjoy their journey. The most rewarding approach is to make an immediate change in your behavior. Step 2: Seek support from comrades in destiny. The best people to look for open and selfless support are people who share your goal. Share your enthusiasm with those who have seen the light. Step 3: One thing at a time. If you want to straighten out a number of things at a time then the probability is that you will achieve nothing. If your challenge is, a whole lot of bad habits then handle one at a time. A major makeover takes two or three years. Step 4: Don’t give up anything completely. Step 5: Enjoy slow progress. Allow your body to adjust to changes to make the change permanent. The faster you want to achieve permanent results, the less probable your success and more temporary your achievement. Step 6: Give space to your strength. We all like to develop and grow through our skills and talents. Accept and control your weaknesses, but let your strength define who you are. Step 7: Stop feeling guilty. A “healthy obsession” is needed to fill the gap that is left when an unhealthy habit is shaken off. In other words, you need an alternative. Do not aim for perfection, because that is the worst enemy of all when your are trying to get something done. Prisoners have to. The unhappy must. The competent receive. The happy want. |
